Importance of Music in Your Workouts

Every fitness enthusiast loves to combine music with their workout. It keeps you motivated and takes care of boredom.

The synchronization of music with a workout can feel immensely satisfying and encourages you to work harder.

But did you know that there are many benefits to listening to music while working out? If not, read on to find out.

Benefits of Listening to Music While Working Out

Your physical performance improves: Have you ever noticed how you can run faster, walk an extra mile, and do more than your usual sets of push-ups when listening to music? A 2013 study in Brain and Cognition found that music stimulates the part of your brain that induces movements in your body, making you work harder.

You become happy: A 2012 study examined the impact of music on human health and showed that participants who appeared happy experienced increased secretions of the happy hormone, also known as serotonin. Music also stimulates your brain to release a neurotransmitter called dopamine that gives you a sense of pleasure. Another study reported that listening to music while exercising takes your mood up by a notch.

Improves your immunity: Listening to music for about 50 minutes increases the secretion of antibodies. Antibodies help you fight off bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms, protecting you from various infections and diseases.

Reduces stress and anxiety: Excercise and music make up the perfect duo to curb stress and anxiety. Your body decreases the production of cortisol and lowers your heart rate when listening to music, helping you relieve emotional stress and making you less anxious.

Music minimizes fatigue: Music has a work-enhancing effect on your body. A 2010 study in Psychology of Sport and Exercise showed that music reduces fatigue by delaying feelings of fatigue and improves your physical performance.

Rhythmic response: Your body tends to respond to the beats of the music and utilizes energy much more efficiently when its movements are in sync with the music. A 2012 study reported that music coordinates your body’s movement by prompting a region of your brain that is responsible for coordinating movement.

A hard workout becomes easy: A good playlist distracts you from the difficulty of the exercise and makes even a hard workout feel light and breezy. A 2017 study in the Journal of Sport and Health Sciences found that music acts as a dissociative stimulus that shifted study participants’ attention away from the physical effort they had to put in while working out in low- and moderate-level exercises.
